PRESS RELEASE - BOTSWANA RHINO’S UNDER SIEGE AS SECOND RHINO IS POACHED IN ONE WEEK

Gaborone, Botswana (4 October 2019) – A rhino was killed on 2 October, following a recorded poaching incident on 27 September in the core rhino range in the Okavango Delta. This poaching incident brings the number of rhinoceros poached this financial year alone from 1 April 2019 up to now to nine (9), an unprecedented number.

The increased poaching of rhinos is deeply worrying in a country that has over the last few years received rhinos in an effort to safe guard and revive rhino populations. “Botswana does not have many wild rhinos, our population is relatively small” said Dr. Mmadi Reuben, Department of Wildlife and National Parks Rhino Coordinator in Botswana. “We have been losing about a rhino a month to poaching, losing two in one week is unacceptable. If the poaching continues at this rate there will be no rhinos in Botswana in a year or two, especially the black rhino a ‘critically endangered species’.” This will be a huge loss for the country with a strict and strong anti-poaching policy, which the Government has committed immense resources.

The anti-poaching forces have now placed the protection of rhinos and location of these poaching gangs as their highest priority, with two poachers having lost their lives during operations recently. However, as is well known, the Okavango is a very large area with difficult wetland terrain, which these poachers are using to their advantage. Engaging the communities in the Okavango Delta to increase awareness as well as private sector and NGOs will also be crucial in the fight against wildlife crime.

Rhino poaching has been on the increase in the region with South Africa possibly being the worst hit. Namibia also recently recorded poaching of rhinos as well. Rhino poachers it seems have now turned their attention to Botswana.

The Government of Botswana will continue to improve efforts, and is committed to mobilizing more resources to combat and eradicate this scourge. The public and affected (host and nearby) communities in particular are encouraged to report any suspicious activity to the nearest Department of Wildlife or Botswana Police office.

PRESS RELEASE - EFFORTS STEPPED UP TO REDUCE POACHING OF RHINOCEROS IN THE OKAVANGO DELTA

In October 2019 the Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources Conservation and Tourism released a statement regarding the ongoing poaching of rhinoceros in the Okavango Delta. At that time 9 rhinos had been killed between 1 April 2019 and 4 October 2019.

This unfortunate situation on the countries rhino population has continued with more rhinos being killed. From October 2019 to date, 13 more rhinos have been poached. This brings the number of rhinos poached since October 2018 to 31 rhinos with 23 being white rhinoceros and 8 black rhinoceros.

Government has considerably stepped up efforts to address the poaching situation with interventions leading to recovery of some horns and hunting weapons.

During engagement with the poachers seven casualties occurred amongst poachers who were resisting arrest. The Government will continue to do all it can to ensure the protection of this iconic species, which was reintroduced twice in Botswana.

We appeal to all stakeholders including the communities and private sector to support the operations to protect this iconic species. We further call upon members of the community to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities in and around the Okavango Delta to the nearest security agents.

Gunshots in the Okavango Delta- Another Rhino massacred

Following gunshots that rattled the Okavango Delta yesterday (Wednesday), this morning it has been confirmed that another rhino is gone.
This is the second rhino to go down to poachers in the delta in a space of two days. On Tuesday a white male was gunned down and yesterday another white went down in NG 32 of the Okavango Delta. Rhinos are poached at an unprecedented scale in the delta and at this scale, they would get finished sooner or later.
There were other two cases of rhino poaching on 3 and 6th, January in the delta.
In December just close to Christmas, Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources Conservation, and Tourism released a press release stating that 13 rhinos have been poached so far (from 1 April 2019) but other figures point the onslaught as than 20.#bwsafarinews

Ich kann gar nicht so viele Tränen produzieren, wie ich heulen möchte!

Botswana hat ja einige Rhinos zur 'Sicherung und Aufbewahrung' von SA. 😵 Nicht im Delta, sondern wenn ich mich richtig erinnere, bei irgendwelchen Reserves von Diamant- oder Goldminen. Ob das noch sicher genug ist? Sollten mal anfangen sich auf ihren eigenen Bestand zu konzentrieren.

Two more Rhino carcasses discovered today
Two old rhino carcasses were discovered in the Okavango Delta today taking the total number of carcasses discovered this week to four.
We reported earlier today that on Tuesday (January 14) a white male was gunned down and yesterday (Wednesday, January 15) another white went down in NG 32 of the Okavango Delta.
Information reaching us is that two more old rhino carcasses were discovered today (Thursday 16.) The carcasses are reportedly very old; the other is a decomposed bone of black rhino and the other white rhino.
The two cases take the number of rhino carcasses discovered this week alone to four in total. There were other two cases of rhino poaching recorded on 3 and 6th, January 2020 in the delta.

Es ist wirklich furchtbar.
Diese Rhinokuh überlebte im Sanctuary u d wurde nachdem sich die Population erholte wieder ausgewildert. Jetzt ist sie tot.

Das Zahlen sind deswegen so dramatisch, weil man sie ins Verhältnis zur Population setzen muss. Botswana hat in Summe nur 500 Rhinos und nicht wie Namibia und Südafrika Tausende. Rhinos sind da kaum zu finden. Wenn es stimmt, das 50 Rhinos gewildert wurden, dann wurden in nur 10 Monaten 10% der Population ausradiert.

Das alles ist aber kein Zufall. Botswana fährt jetzt die Ernte für den politisch gewollten Richtungswechsel ein. Botswana hatte lange ein effektives - wenn auch nicht umunstrittenes - System zum Schutz der Tiere. Der neue Präsident Masisi hat das weitgehend abgeschafft und dafür die ach so wertvolle Trophäenjagd wieder eingeführt. Trophäenjagd führt ja angeblich auch zu effektiven Patrouillen und besserem Schutz der Tiere - behaupten die Befürworter, ohne die Evidenz auf ihrer Seite zu haben.

Die Khamas, Jouberts usw. sind für Präsident Masisi alles Lügner und Spinner. Elephants without Borders, die im Land die Elefantenzählungen nach den mit Abstand höchsten wissenschaftlichen Standards durchführen, bezeichnet Präsident Masisi als "biggest hoax of the 21st Century". Das ist der gesetzte neue Rahmen für den Naturschutz und dann kann man über die Ergebnisse nicht verwundert sein.

Botswana galt lange als Musterland für Tierschutz und Arterhalt in Afrika. Damit ist es vorbei. Bin nicht sicher, ob ich Botswana einbrechende Tourismuszahlen wünschen soll, damit es eine Umkehr gibt oder dann alles nur noch schlimmer wird?!

irgendwie werde ich das gefühl nicht los, dass du die dinge vezerrt siehst/sehen willst.
Nur so viel: die nashörner wurden nicht in jagdgebiete ausgewildert. Insofern gab es dort nie patroulien durch die konzessionsinhaber.
Desweiteren kannst du im verlinkten artikel lesen, dass das problem nicht das unterbewaffnete dwnp ist.

Hallo Avioniker, nur zur Erinnerung:
Masisi hat „rule of law“ wieder hergestellt, denn das Vorgehen des Präsidenten Khama war ungesetzlich.
Das 2014 per Erlass verordnete GENERELLE Jagdverbot*) hätte in den Folgejahren im Parlament bestätigt werden müssen, was nicht geschah. Das wurde korrigiert.
Für die Anti-Wildernmaßnahmen ist die BDF zuständig, dort gibt eine eigene Einheit dafür. Die Aufstellung militärisch bewaffneter und außerhalb von Polizei und BDF agierender Einheiten verbietet die Verfassung. Das wurde korrigiert, aber der kleine Khama hat noch Waffenbestände geheim gebunkert, man wird sehen.
Shoot on sight, shoot to kill (z. B. aus eine Hinterhalt heraus) ist nur im Krieg oder vergleichbaren Gefahrensituationen zulässig , ein Kriegszustand war nicht erklärt. Execute on the spot von GEFANGENEN (!!) nach deren Verhör ist auch im Krieg ein Verbrechen, nämlich vorsätzlicher Mord, in Friedenszeiten sowieso. Diese Praktiken hat Masisi unterbunden.
Für obiges und noch viel mehr können die Khamas und auch die Partei, die BW ausgenommen haben, noch durchaus zur Verantwortung gezogen werden. Z.B. für die aberwitzigen Rüstungsausgaben. Gott sei Dank und hoffentlich sind Khamas Rüstungsprojekte, von Kampfbombern bis Raketen und Radpanzer jetzt obsolet.
*)@Jagdverbot wird hier konsequent übersehen, dass nicht nur Trophäenjagd verboten wurde, sondern auch die Subsistenzjagd, was Tausende in Armut und Hunger gestürzt hat. Beides konterkarierte auch die Bekämpfung des Wilderns, weil das Jagdverbot den Betroffenen, angesichts fehlender Ersatzleistungen, nur eine Überlebensmöglichkeit ließ: Nämlich zu Wildern oder Wilderer zu führen. Ihnen die Lebensgrundlage zu entziehen und das Landrecht abzunehmen, ist aber sicher die effektivste Methode alle Bewohner aus diesen Gebieten hinauszuekeln und sie für lukrative Safarikonzessionen zugänglich zu machen.
Die fetten Jahre der Jouberts sind sicher vorbei. Sie werden jetzt ihre Filmprojekte selber finanzieren müssen und Gerichtstermine wegen widerrechtlichen Lodgebetriebs auf fremden Grund und Boden wahrnehmen müssen.

PRESS RELEASE –ANTI POACHING OPERATION INCIDENT

The Botswana Defence Force (BDF) focusing on anti-poaching operations, sadly informs the public about an incident that occurred this morning (Wednesday) at around 0300 hrs at Chiefs Island in the Ngami Area whereby there was an exchange of fire between a BDF patrol team and poachers, which resulted in the death of a BDF member and one poacher.

Despite the positive achievements recorded over the years, poaching activities have certainly not stopped as poachers continue to target rhinos, elephants and other endangered species in our national parks.

This incident clearly indicates that poachers continue to declare war on members of the Botswana Defence Force as they have adopted new tactics and operating methods that escalated poaching activities particularly at Chiefs Islands. Since 2019 to date 11 (eleven) poachers have been killed while targeting members of the BDF.

The name of the deceased has been withheld until the next of kin have been informed.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the deceased at this difficult time. We therefore request that they be accorded the space and privacy to mourn their loved one.

Okavango Delta Poachers Now Target White Dehorned Rhinos
Two Dehorned white rhinos have gone down to poachers in Chiefs Island of Moremi Game Reserve.
The horn stubs were taken.
This follow the discovery of another white carcass at NG30 on Wednesday this week.
Government is facing unprecedented spate of rhino poaching in the delta with more than 50 rhinos said to have been killed.
To control the scourge government translocated all black rhinos from deltaand dehorned whites. There has been debate elsewhere that however, dehorning is not a deterrent for poaching as some poachers can even shoot dehorned animals in revenge.
Since the lockdown the occurance of poaching had gone down. Lots of poachers have been killed by antipoaching unit but it appears they keep on coming.
One source stated "these guys are resident there. There work in shifts and take turns to poach."
But Botswana this week sent a warning to poachers that the country will never run short of body bags.

Okavango Delta Rhinos- the massacre continues
Two more white rhino carcasses were discovered today in the Okavango Delta as the unprecedented slaying of this charismatic specie continue unabated in the wetlands.
Another fresh carcass was discovered in the same area last week.
Government took measures like dehorning the whites and translocating the blacks to a safer ground. But it would appear the whole 2020 was a christmas year for the merciless poachers who still poach the dehorned rhinos for the horn stub.
In October alone seven rhinos are said to have been poached.more than 50 rhinos have so far been poached since 2019 as international poachers shoot and kill our rhinos.

Erschreckend, dass zum Ganzen von offizieller Seite 0,0 Kommunikation nach Außen erfolgt. Bei den Zahlen, die in dem Artikel genannt sind, stellt sich mir die Frage: abgesehen von der Khama Sanctury, gibt es überhaupt noch Nashörner in Botswana?

Wenn seit 2015 aus SA und Zim 100 Nashörner nach Botswana eingeführt wurden und innerhalt der letzten 3 Jahre zwischen 100 und 120 Nashörner gewildert worden sind, davon allein in diesem Jahr bereits 25, dann dürfte das unter Berücksichtigungen einer eigentlich etwa 5% jährlichen Vermehrungsrate bereits der Großteil der Gesamtpopulation im Delta sein. Mit anderen Worten: das dürfte es gewesen sein zum Thema "Rückführung der Nashörner nach Bots".

Künftig macht es keinerlei Sinn, Nashörner für zig-tausende $$ nach Bots zu bringen, wenn die Tiere dort unmittelbar als Kanonenfutter enden. Das Projekt dürfte komplett gescheitert sein.
