Desert Lion Conservation (War: Zwei Halsbänder...)

Hallo zusammen,

am Samstag wurden vier "Wüsten"löwen bei Sesfontein vergiftet. Es handelt sich um 3 Männchen und 1 Weibchen. Drei mutmaßliche Wilderer wurden festgenommen und bleiben vorerst in Haft. Sie hatten Fleisch vergiftet und ausgelegt. Es handelt sich wohl nicht um einen Mensch-Wildtierkonflikt, sondern möglicherweise um eine bewusste "Jagd" auf die Löwen. Die genauen Umstände sind wohl nicht nicht bekannt. DIe Männer waren aber in Besitz von jeder Menge Kadavern von Zebra, Oryx etc.

Der Vorfall und die Festnahmen wurden vom MET und Polizei bestätigt.

Den Angeklagten.... wurde gestern am Magistratsgericht in Opuwo eine bedingte Freilassung verweigert. Magistratsrichter Eliud Nakolonda folgte damit einem Antrag von Staatsanwalt Namebo Sibya der eine Freilassung der Beschuldigten mit Hinweis auf mögliche Verdunkelungsgefahr ablehnte...

Die Halsbänder wurden auch zerstört. 🙁 Wird bestimmt auch bald noch etwas Näheres in der Presse stehen.



Fand aber alles am 26 July statt, Löwen sind irgendwann zwischen 00h00 und 06h00 gestorben. Die Daten der Halsbänder sagen dies aus.
Leider hat sich die Lage seit 2016, bei Tomakas 3 Löwen, in der Anabeb & Sesfontein Conservancy nicht verbessert.

erstmals haben sich alle wichtigen Player in der Wüstenlöwen-Frage zusammengesetzt und arbeiten gemeinsam an einer Lösung:
"FEEDBACK TO OUR SUPPORTERS AND FOLLOWERS:an extra-ordinary meeting was held on 8 th August 2019 at Otjikondo involving members of the Northwest Lion Working Group NGO's and the Ministry of Environment and Tourism to address the integration of DeLHRA as new member into the group. The group consists of DeLHRA (Inki, Izak, Claudia and Martin attended), Desert Lion Conservation Trust (Dr Philip Stander), IRDNC, NNF,TOSCO, AFRICAT NORTH and WHAT under guidance, coordination and facilitation of the MET. It was decided to move forward in good faith and to include DeLHRA as an equal member, and to afford it the tools available made possible by participating NGO's like DLCT and WHAT, pertaining to technology used for monitoring of key Lions, in order for us to compliment current capacity (in need of expansion) to perform productively and effectively regarding the prevention, mitigation and management of Human Lion Conflict situations. Proper structures and procedures will be commissioned and smoothed out in time to enhance the performance of the NWLWG asap in the interest of the conservancy communities and the conservation of the Desert Adapted Lions. We are optimistic that more can be achieved through this and satisfied that differences can in future be addressed and settled around the table through productive discussions and collective actions. It is clear to all parties that hard work lies ahead and big shortcomings exist which can only be overcome through commitment and of course funding. We look forward to the challenges and will remain true to our principles, beliefs and ideals as well as the transparency DeLHRA has maintained from inception of the organization. We wish to thank the Director Dr Colgar Shikopo and Dep Director Chris Munwela for their facilitation and mediation of this as well as all participants for their input and presence." Das Datum ist nicht wichtig. Wird sicherlich auch demnächst in der AZ sein.

Regarding the circulating video of lions that caught a donkey in the Oshivelo area, the details are as follows:

It has been confirmed that the lions escaped from the Etosha National Park Last night and killed a donkey and a cow in the area between Cansablanca and Oshivelo.

We have also established that this is a pride of six lions and has since all returned to the park.

Human Wildlife Conflict has become a huge challenge in recent years and more so because of the prevailing drought.

In this regard we appeal to farmers and communities to assist us in managing these conflicts by putting in place mitigating measures such as putting their livestock in kraal at night. This will assist is to avoid such unfortunate incidences where people lose their valuable livestock.

Accordingly we also wish to express our regret over such cases particularly so because the Park's fence is in a bad state and may be a contributing factor.

Similar incidences were also reported in the Kunene region last week where lions have attached and killed livestock.

The first incident took place on 21 January, on Arizona Farm south of Gobatere, 2 cattle were killed and in retaliation the farmers killed the 2 lions. It was also reported that the lions were shot while preying on a cattle carcass.

The second incidence took place in Anabeb Conservancy, Khowarib area on 22 January. It was reported that 17 goats were killed. We established that three lions were involved.

The 3rd incident took place on 23 January, 8 goats in Khowarib post were also killed by 5 lions consisting of a male, female and 3 sub adults.

It was also reported that some of the Kunene incidents happened during the day while the livestock were grazing.

The Ministry is working around the clock to to find an amicable solution to these conflicts. We appeal for calm and patience and urge that the public must not resort to taking the law into their own hands.

In all the cases, we are investigating the possibility of possible assitance to those who suffered loses through our Self Reliance Scheme.

DESERT LION NEWS JUST IN:
Lions have killed three cows and injured another which died later at Opdraend in the Torra Conservancy yesterday. The Lions (gender and age and quantity yet unknown) were on the carcasses and would not budge. The farmer then shot and killed one, almost adult, male Lion which sent the rest fleeing. The attacks occurred in the afternoon while the livestock was grazing far from the corral where they are kept safely at night. The corrals have been upgraded about three years ago with DeLHRA's help by the farmer who co-operates very well with DeLHRA. No successful night attacks at the corrals have been experienced since although the Lions came knocking several times...
About two weeks ago 10 goats were taken and again three days ago another 5 by two Lionesses and two sub adults coming from the Palmwag concession at the fountain at Palm (5 km East of Palmwag). This also happened during day time and the attack sent the young herder boys fleeing for the safety of their home both times.
It is a sad fact that while DeLHRA is not provided with satellite data and collars not fitted these Lions can not be monitored and an early warning/pre-empting system not effectively commissioned (as per the undertakings in the great HWC Policy instituted by the Ministry of Environment and Tourism).
The end result is this...., Lions shot by farmers out of desperation due to the lack of effective assistance received. This is increasing rapidly and the question is, how long will the Lions last and how long can the farmers hold out?!! Why is DeLHRA stonewalled instead of being provided the means (collars and positions of the Lions) to help stop this state of affairs? Despite all efforts by DeLHRA this status quo remains and bureaucratic stonewalling continues and incidents like this just become statistics.....
Rumors of poisoning of the Lions by farmers are on the increase although the last ones who did this at Nuwepos are still in jail in Opuwo and can expect long jail sentences!
Heavens forbid, but are the authorities waiting for a young herder to be killed by a Lion first before they react??!! In such a case can the Lion be viewed as the problem animal or is the real problem the ineptitude of those who can make a difference? The solution is not rocket science nor as "complex" as it is made out to be.....

Human-wildlife conflict intensifies at Ehi-Rovipuka Conservancy

OPUWO, 21 FEB (NAMPA) – The Ehi-Rovipuka Conservancy, AfriCat and the Integrated Rural Development and Nature Conservation (IRDNC) in the Kunene Region have lately reported numerous cases of expanding lion populations that further decimate the livestock of already vulnerable farmers.
Over recent years, drought has emaciated the herds of farmers’ cattle, goats and sheep and now farmers have to contend with the growing mobility of lions that feed on their deteriorating livestock in Kunene.
In an interview with Nampa on Thursday, AfriCat Foundation lion guard, Scott Kapi said the human-wildlife conflict in the Ehi-Rovipuka nature reserve is intensifying after several predators were shot by farmers in retribution, prompting IRDNC and the Ministry of Environment and Tourism to prioritise mitigation solutions in the area.
“From January to date, nine donkeys and seven cattle have been slain by lions and leopards. In return, farmers killed five lions and two leopards,” Kapi said.
He told this news agency that lions that were killed by enraged farmers are alleged to have escaped from the neighbouring Etosha National Park and from Hobatere Lodge.
“The Etosha National Park and Hobatere Lodge boundaries are wrecked and we believe that those lions might have fled from there,” Kapi said.
The ranger added that those deserted lions are not being monitored, asserting that the conservancy’s lions are equipped with tracking collars on their necks which make it easier for the trackers to know and react quickly on their whereabouts to avoid such incidents.
In response on how to mitigate human-wildlife conflict, spokesperson of the Ministry of Environment and Tourism (MET), Romeo Muyunda told Nampa that the ministry is in the process of upgrading the Etosha fence.
He also empathised with the farmers who lose their livestock, saying that MET is working around the clock to mitigate these kinds of conflicts and to assist farmers who lost their livestock through small reimbursements.
Muyunda, however, reiterated his call on farmers to avoid residing in predator-prone areas and to be alert when herding their livestock.
He advised that farmers who reside in predator-prone areas should further make sure that their livestock slumber in kraals during the night.
Muyunda noted that MET has now increased its assistance to N.dollars 3 000 per cow, N.dollars 700 per sheep, N.dollars 500 per donkey, N.dollars 800 per horse, N.dollars 500 per goat and N.dollars 700 for a pig for farmers losing their animals through human-wildlife conflict.
