Am 17.12. 2025 öffnet das Museum Swakopmund seine Türen kostenfrei für Besucher.

Das Museum widmet sich der Geschichte des Ortes, den reichen Edelstein- und Mineralvorkommen der Region sowie der faszinierenden Tierwelt Namibias.

Mir persönlich hat der Besuch außerordentlich gut gefallen.

SWAKOPMUND RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION (SRA) FULLY SUPPORTS THE REDEVELOPMENT OF HISTORIC ERF 989 INTO A BOUTIQUE HOTEL!
The Swakopmund Residents Association proudly places on record its unequivocal support for the proposed redevelopment and adaptive reuse of Erf 989 (corner of Daniel Tjongarero Avenue, Garrison Street & Hendrik Witbooi Street) – a Grade A98 heritage building (98% of original fabric intact) constructed in 1906 as Swakopmund’s Post Office with horse stables, later serving as the Municipal Office and Council Chambers until 2010.
This iconic structure, listed in the historical buildings register as “Stadtverwaltung”, is currently an eyesore after years of neglect and underuse. Without urgent intervention, it risks irreversible structural decay.
The proposal from Chamberlain & Associates Architects:
Transform it into a modern boutique hotel with:
41 guest rooms
(11 Standard + 4 Luxury + 5 Junior Suites on 1st floor;
12 Standard + 4 Luxury + 3 Junior Suites on 2nd floor)
Ground-floor facilities:
Reception lobby, curio shop, restaurant (90 pax indoor + 26 pax terrace), coffee shop lounge (41 pax indoor + 8 pax terrace), meeting rooms, spa (180 m²), offices, kitchen, laundry & service areas
Sensitive adaptive reuse: Full preservation and restoration of the historic façade, streetscape character and external architectural features. Internal layout changes (central passage & small rooms no longer suitable for 21st-century use) plus roof modifications to create functional, inhabitable spaces. Matching colour scheme (NSC S2005-Y20R, S0502-Y, S7502-Y), minimal signage, and purpose-made aluminium windows replicating originals.
Bulk increases responsibly from 1.1 to 1.7; coverage from 45.4% to 66.3%; 32 parking bays provided.
Strong local backing already secured:
Swakopmund Municipality Aesthetic Committee approval (21 January 2025) – plans stamped and ready.
Letter of full support from Hon. Victor Maswahu, Regional Councillor & MP (11 March 2026): “This development will stimulate local economic activity, create much-needed youth employment, promote tourism and ensure historical buildings are preserved through productive use.”
Request for Reconsideration from Swakopmund Municipal Council (Mayor Blasius Goraseb, 23 October 2025): Urges National Heritage Council to allow controlled internal adaptations under professional supervision, citing the building’s history of prior internal changes and successful adaptive reuse examples in France, Italy and Zanzibar. “Preserve the façade – renew the interior for sustainability.”
Why SRA supports this 100%:
Historic buildings must remain practically usable and economically viable to survive. World experience proves that unused heritage structures deteriorate, while sensitively adapted ones (especially for tourism) receive the investment and maintenance they deserve. This project will:
Ensure long-term preservation of the structure
Encourage private investment in heritage properties
Boost Swakopmund’s tourism offering
Revitalise the historic town centre
Responsible redevelopment and genuine heritage conservation can and must coexist. When undertaken with full respect for scale, architectural character and the conservation-area streetscape, this initiative enhances rather than diminishes our unique historic environment.
We therefore call on the National Heritage Council of Namibia to approve the project without delay – granting permission for the balanced internal adaptations that will secure this building’s future while honouring its past.
Swakopmund’s heritage is our greatest asset. Initiatives like this protect, revitalise and sustainably utilise our historic treasures for the long-term prosperity of our community.
SRA says YES to this forward-looking, responsible development!
