Zwei Männer im Alter von 24 und 26 Jahren wurden am Mittwoch wegen Besitz von geschützten Wildtieren und Wildtierprodukten festgenommen. Wie die namibische Polizei in ihrem Kriminalbericht vom selben Tag bekannt gibt, wurden während einer Kontrolluntersuchung an der Straßensperre in Ndjyona in der Kavango-Ost-Region bei den Männern die Haut eines jungen sowie eines ausgewachsenen Krokodils, sechs Zehen von Honigdachsen und ein lebendiges Schuppentier gefunden. Der Gesamtwert der tierischen Produkte sei noch nicht ermittelt worden. Die Ermittlungen dauern an.

Wilderer in Südafrika haben in einem Nationalpark eine schwangere Nashornkuh und deren etwa zwei Jahre altes Kalb erlegt. Das ungeborene Nashorn hätte etwa im Februar oder März zur Welt kommen sollen, sagte am Freitag Perry Dell, Sprecherin des Pilanesberg Wildlife Trust. Die Wilderer waren demnach im Nationalpark Pilanesberg knapp zwei Autostunden nördlich von Johannesburg vor Tagesanbruch am Donnerstag gerade dabei, die Hörner der Tiere abzusägen, als sie von einem Safarifahrzeug überrascht wurden. Sie ließen die Kadaver mitsamt Hörnern zurück und flohen.

Die Polizei schnitt die tote Nashornkuh auf der Suche nach den Projektilen der Wilderer auf. Die Forensiker entnahmen dabei auch das ungeborene Nashorn aus dem Bauch der etwa acht Jahre alten Mutter, wie Dell weiter erklärte. Eine Nashorn-Schwangerschaft dauert etwa 16 bis 18 Monate. In dem relativ kleinen Nationalpark wurden im vergangenen Jahr zwei Nashörner von Wilderern getötet, dieses Jahr seien es jedoch bereits 16 gewesen. Pilanesberg macht aus Sicherheitsgründen keine Angaben zur Zahl der Nashörner im Park.

In Südafrika erlegen Wilderer jährlich etwa 1000 Rhinozerose wegen ihrer Hörner, die sie für teures Geld vor allem nach Asien verkaufen. Die meisten Nashörner werden offiziellen Angaben zufolge im Krüger-Nationalpark getötet. In Afrika gibt nach Schätzungen noch 20000 bis 25000 wild lebende Breitmaul- und Spitzmaulnashörner.
