REDEVELOPMENT OF ETOSHA RESORTS
GREAT NEWS FOR NAMIBIAN TOURISM
The new management of NWR is fully aware of the dilapidated state of the facilities, and the negative impact this has on the Namibian tourism industry as a whole. The turnaround strategy, which was approved by the Cabinet of the Republic of Namibia in June 2006, therefore identified as high priority the need for major upgrading and redevelopment in all the tourist facilities in our portfolio.
However, this could not commence until the necessary financing was obtained. Namibia Wildlife Resorts Ltd is therefore pleased to confirm to the tourism market that redevelopment and renovations in the three Etosha resorts, Okaukuejo, Halali and Namutoni are commencing by mid October 2006. This is in time to prepare for the next tourism season in 2007 and the Etosha National Park
Centenary celebrations which commences on 22 March 2007. A complete redevelopment of facilities will take place, accompanied by general landscaping to provide a more pleasing experience and comfort to our guests. Our important commitment to the tourist market is to provide excellent, comfortable and fascinating tourism products.
The refurbishment is expected to be completed by mid-2007. There will be major changes to the units and different descriptions will be communicated very soon.
We take consideration of the need of the market to have the resorts in Etosha refurbished for the benefit of their clients and the tourism industry in Namibia as a whole. In light of this, the renovations of the current state of facilities are to us and of course to our clients unavoidable.
As a result of this exercise, the availability of rooms or occupancy will be limited to 80 % at any given time, leaving 20% for renovations.
Below is a short description on what to expect in each camp:
Okaukuejo: Throughout all accommodation units and other public areas, interiors will be redesigned. All the waterhole units will be significantly upgraded, with the front row developed into double-story units with balconies overlooking the waterhole. The current standard 4-bed chalets will be converted to 2-bed units to provide a more comfortable experience for our guests. Self-catering facilities will be removed from accommodation units, but small fridges and kettles will be provided. Landscaping and traffic flow is being revised to reduce disturbance, specifically close to the waterhole, with a separate entrance
provided to the camping site.
Halali: All accommodation units and other public areas will be redesigned and redeveloped. Individual outside entertainment areas will be created for the economy bungalows. Self-catering facilities will be removed from accommodation units, but small fridges and kettles will be provided. The camp will be landscaped to improve traffic flow, walkways, and privacy to individual units, and to restore a more natural environment. The restaurant will be extended to allow for an outdoor dining area. The swimming pool will be replaced, and the camping sites will be upgraded.
Namutoni: The Namutoni Fort will be redeveloped to become the centre of attraction – providing for restaurants, other retail outlets and the museum. Walkways will be developed along the wall of the fort. All accommodation will be removed from the fort, and no vehicles will be allowed within the fort. The standard chalets will be converted to two-bed units, and current restaurant/shop complex will be developed into additional accommodation units. Self-catering facilities will be removed from accommodation units, but small fridges and kettles will be provided. Landscaping will be undertaken to streamline pedestrian and traffic flow.
Sossusvlei : Of interest to all visitors to Namibia will be the Sossus Dune Lodge, to be constructed to the west of Sesriem camp, behind the first mountain ridge inside the park, overlooking the fascinating Sesriem Canyon. The primary attraction will be the pristine desert panorama as well as access to the ever-popular destination, Sossusvlei.
Situated within the Namib-Naukluft Park, Sossus Dune Lodge affords the advantage of being able to reach Sossusvlei before sunrise, and to leave after sunset. The area also boasts a variety of wildlife forms, from desert adapted plants and small reptiles, birds and mammals, to the more ubiquitous springbok and Oryx. The focus is on providing eco-friendly accommodation, within an unspoilt desert landscape. Professional guided tours will be offered to help unleash the beauty and biological diversity of the desert environment to our valued guests.
