KNP AFFECTED BY HEAVY RAINS
The recent heavy rains experienced in most part of the country have resulted in closure of some of the camps and gravel roads in the southern part of the Kruger National Park (KNP). The KNP has already experienced heavy rain in the northern part this week where all the bush camps and gravel roads were temporarily closed.
“We are pleased to announce that up to this stage there has been no report of loss or threat to human life. Some of our visitors who were trapped were airlifted to the nearest camps. We urge visitors to refrain from crossing overflowing rivers and to always stay alert at all times” said the KNP’s Regional General Manager: Marula, Ms Lucy Nhlapo.
The following roads; camps and facilities in the KNP are currently not accessible and have been temporarily closed.
Tamboti camp Talamati camp Muzandzeni picnic spot Biyamiti bush camp Bateleur Shimuwini Sirheni Giriyondo port of entry Crocodile Bridge camp and entrance gate H10 Tshokwane to Lower Sabie H1 -2 Sand River & Sabie low water bridge H1/1 link road between Skukuza and Pretoriuskop H7 Orpen to Satara Nwaswitshaka low level bridge
“All the gravel roads in park have been closed for safety and motorists are requested to stay on tarred roads. We are constantly monitoring the situation around the park and collecting all recorded rainfall levels at different camps to ensure that we keep visitors informed. Our emergency personnel are on high alert and can be contacted at all hours on this number 013 735 4325 ” concluded Nhlapo.
Confirmed bookings between 20 - 22 January 2013 need to be reconfirmed at the following restcamps; Skukuza, Berg en Dal, Pretoriuskop, Satara, Letaba, Mopani and Shingwedzi between 07h00 to 18h00.

So wie es im Moment aussieht, war das letzte Jahr wesentlich schlimmer (dennoch ist es schlimm genug). Wir waren fuer Morgen und Dienstag in Biyamiti gebucht und sind umgebucht auf Lower Sabie. Danach geht es fuer 2 Naechte nach Satara. Nun bitt alle die Daumen halten, dass es auch so klappt. Ich melde mich mal zwischendurch und gebe Lagebericht.

UPDATE ON RAIN SITUATION IN THE KNP
Members of the KNP Disaster Committee met early this morning to assess the impact of the heavy rain in the Kruger National Park (KNP). Members briefed the committee of their initial inspections and assessment regarding roads, water and sewer, vehicle fleet, electrical and mechanical as well Protection through the Operation Centre that has been set up in the Park. There have been no reports of any major incidents throughout the park except the ones listed below. Tshokwane: Low level bridge to staff and ranger houses were reported as over flowing resulting in staff personnel trapped at picnic site and others at living houses, but their lives are not threated. Olifants and Sweni trails: Eleven tourists who were trapped at these trails have been safely airlifted to Satara. Tamboti: The camp is isolated with 8 guests and staff including the section ranger. The water levels are being constantly monitored and a rescue plan will be executed to airlift them to Satara. Talamati, Biyamiti: The camps have been closed and guests moved to the safety of Satara and Berg en Daal. Houtboschrand: Four patrol rangers and a SANDF unit are stuck in the area, they are in constant contact with the Section Ranger and will be assisted. Muzanzene: Four guests and one staff member have been air lifted to safety. Shingwedzi: All guests were evacuated to Mopani last night. 70 staff members are currently being evacuated.

In Pafuri sind 315mm Regen gefallen in den letzten 48 Stunden, so siehts da gerade aus:
Die Strasse bis zum Gate soll nicht mehr existieren, das Camp Shingwedzi soll zerstört worden sein, offizielle Bestätigung steht aber noch aus.

..und ich war noch anfangs Dezember 12 in Shingwedzi und im Pafuri. Ich habe in meinen knapp 20 Jahren noch nie eine solche Trockenheit gesehen im Norden - der Limpopo hatte nicht mal mehr ein Rinnsal.....

Hab soeben Details gesehen betr. Limpopo. Ich wiederhole mich, anfangs Dez 12 kein Rinnsal und nun 2.5 km
The Limpopo has apparently breached its banks, flooding not only the pan system that runs parallel to its southern bank, but also the slightly higher Fever Tree and Lala Palm forests in between. That's up to 2½ km in places. It the flooding is as extensive on the Zimbabwean side, it would be up to 5 km wide. Now that's impressive!

das ging mir genauso, ich war auch in Pafuri und hab erst gedacht ich wäre falsch so trocken wie das da gewesen ist, nochfolgend noch ein paar Details von Sanparks:

Hallo, wir haben ab 9. Februar 3 Wochen Krüger gebucht - fast alle Camps!!!
Wir dachten, dass dies ein entspannter Urlaub werden würde! Wir waren 2010 zur selben Zeit dort und bis auf ein paar kleine Regenschauer - nichts! Es war zwar sehr heiß und ab und zu bewölkt, aber schön grün!!
Hat jemand Erfahrung, was mit den Buchungen in solchen Fällen passiert? Gibt es Rückerstattungen oder heißt es nur "höhere Gewalt"? Natürlich wäre es uns am liebsten, dass alles klappt wie gebucht, aber Shingwedzi ist wohl zerstört - bis zu den Dächern unter Wasser!
Kann man nur hoffen, dass niemand zu Schaden kommt - unsere "Probleme" sind da wohl nebensächlich!

Für die nächsten 2 Monate werden für viele Camps keine Buchungen entgegengenommen - nehme an bestehende verschoben. Shihwedzi ist für 1 Jahr weg. Details siehe Link unten
danke für die Infos! Wir sind gespannt, wie das geregelt wird! Wir haben per E-mail um Umbuchung der "Shingwedzi-Nächte" gebeten. Aber so schnell wird da keine Antwort kommen - die werden vollauf mit den aktuellen Dingen beschäftigt sein. Wir haben ja noch zwei Wochen Zeit!
hier kann man nachlesen wie sich Sanparks bemüht es den Gästen recht zu machen, ich denke das ist sehr positive. 🙂

Hallo
Wir sind seit gestern im Krüger (Letba). Die Gegend um Letaba und Olifants ist gut befahrbar. Es hat mehr Wasser (Tümpel, kleine Bäche) als sonst in dieser Jahreszeit und einige Flutschäden sind sichtbar. Es gibt aber nur wenig Einschränkungen in diesem Teil vom Park. Gesperrt ist z.B. Balule. Aber nur, weil die Zufahrt über den Fluss nicht möglich ist. Die Strassen werden laufend geschoben und repariert. Ich bin sicher in ein, zwei Wochen gibt es bis auf die Ausnahme Shingwedzi keine grossen Einschränkungen mehr.
Der Letaba Fluss war übrigens am Montag sehr hoch (wurde uns erzählt). Mittlerweile ist der Wasserstand aber wieder normal.
