Hallo,sorry for not writing in german,I can understand some things but I'm not able to write it properly. I have seen this is one of the best forums of Namibia and I would like some advice .

I'm travelling to Namibia in June and I'm thinking of hiring a 4x4 single cab,is it worth while paying for full insurance? Is it normal to damage the car there?

Can you recommend some serious and cheap car hire company?
I have a last question,do you think it is possible to do from WIndhoek to Vic Falls and back in 18 days?

Hi and welcome,
first you have to see the space of a single cab, good enough for two with less of package in the front. normally we use dc because of space for cameras fruits meals and water during the ride.
insurance
you have to read exactly the terms, some of them don´t fix accidents without other cars or animals, out of official routes (out-door), river crossing and so on.

Hello Lorena,
We've been to Namibia twice. The first time we had a bushcamper and the second time a single cab vehicle. As Axel has written, you have to decide what you want to keep up front. We managed with the cameras, a small snack and some water. If we needed anything else we just made a stop. Important is when packing the car that you remember where everything is😐.
We took the full insurance - more for peace of mind than anything else. It's worth having a look at the rental terms. If you make any damage the rental company can of course always twist things that it's your fault but if you drive carefully and with common sense, accidents can be avoided. We rented our cars from Britz. They may not be the cheapest but we were very happy with the service. If you look through the Forum you'll find quiet a few companies who can be recommended.
Windhoek - Vic Falls in 18 days is OK. Get yourself a good map and workout your daily distances with space for mishaps and delays because you decide to stay in a place a bit longer than planned;) As Axel has recommended have a look at the natron.net website. It really is the best to help with your planning.

I would recomend you a 4x4 Double Cab.
Because there a many things,what you need douring the Day.
I had fully Insurenc and after an ecident no problems.

Thanks Karl and Sue for your help.Sue I've been looking at the Bushcamper and seen it's a bit more expensive,is it much more confortable to have the beds inside and a proper kitchen? We are only two people but I don't know if setting up the tent everyday and using the gas cooker is going to be alot of fuss.

if you don`t mind about the price,the bushcamper is more
comfortable for cooking and sleeping.

the bushcamper is higher and bigger as the dc, but less comfortable to ride. the beds in the bushcamper are small maybe in cold nights a little bit warmer. the opening of the tent needs about 5 -10 mn for the first time than more less and less. Very often you will do a barbecue (braii), thats only outside and brings a lot of fun, breakfeast you will find within many lodges and camps. for me is the cooking outside one of the highlights in the holidays.

I never booked and I always drive over dez/jan in the SA/NAM holidays. You fix the first night in WDH and then you drive. We have here a lot of lists with camping areas to visit. Most of time you arrive at 15.00 or 16.00 and when its really fully booked you go over to the next 50 km left or right. In the etosha all the camps will build up, may be that will be a little bit narrow to the next tent. When you visit a lodge with camping place you can get informations from the owner to the next "proper" super place.

we we've only ever been in May and June and we've never had problems neither with campsites nor lodges. If we weren't certain we gave a ring a couple of days before so we didn't get any nasty surprises. If your mobile doesn't work get yourself a phone card.
We had the bushcamper in 2002 and we were really pleased with it. Just make sure you don't leave too much laying around in the back things get a bit shaken up on the pads. Take some plastic bags with you too, to put clothes in, the dust and fine sand gets in everywhere. Don't forget it can get very cool at night in June and the bushcamper gives a bit more protection. As you're in the north it's a bit warmer than in the south. We froze last year in the evenings so take some warm clothes with you. Cooking is fun outside but if you just fancy something quick setting up the cooker or getting the brai going is a bit of a bother. But as you're on holiday you've got the time 😉

Hi Lorena,

first of all you have think about your itinerary, than you have to think about the car you need.
You can go to Kasane from Windhoek in 2 days if you have to, and need only a 2WD.
Do you like to see Botswana,Namibia or a bit of both?

We have 22 days to do it. For this tour i would not recommend a bushcamper but a double cab, because of the staggering of the bushcamper if you go through sandy pads.

hi again! it's been a long time.now planning our itinery,leaving in 1 month! we are thinking of going to the desert first and from there to Etosha,and don't know if to go along the c34 up to torrbay and from there to etosha or from swakopmund visit some of the Skeleton coast and then go back to the main roads. Do you know if the c34 is in good conditions? would it be worth while going along the coast ? any idea of how long it would take to get to etosha?

you are brave! You still haven´t organized it... I hope you will get a car and accommodation in advance. Maybe it is easy in low season, but I think you really have to get things started.

I'm so jealous, I wish we could come with you. Like Sunnyshine has said I do hope you've at least booked the car. I wouldn't worry too much about the accommodation though.
The first time we went to Nambia (also in May) we had such big plans about our route. The first couple of days in Windhoek and talking to various people made us change our minds and we changed our route completely. That's the nice thing about not booking your accommodation in advance, you can take things as they come. Our motto is - If we like it somewhere we're going to stay a bit longer and vice versa. So what if we don't see everything we can always come back;).
Get yourself a good map and ask about the condition of the pads when you're there nobody knows it better than the locals. The C-pads are usually in good condition but don't forget to plan your journey so that you're not driving at dusk and when it gets dark. The roads are very dangerous at night. Not just because you can't see the road properly but mostly because of the animals.
This hasn't answered your questions but what I wanted to say is take it easy and enjoy yourselves. You'll have a fantastic time even if you don't get to see everything. 😄
