THE flow of the Kunene River at Ruacana has been higher over the past two weeks than it has been for the previous three years.
According to the latest daily flood bulletin issued by the Namibia Hydrological Service the Kunene River is flowing at a rate of 557.9 cubic metres per second after good rains over the Angolan highlands where the river has its origin. The hydrological services said that water in the river rose to the highest level for the past three years.
In the meantime the water level in the Zambezi and Okavango Rivers are also higher than the corresponding time last year. The higher water levels is also attributed to good rains over the catchment areas in Angola of the rivers that form the north eastern borders of Namibia.
According to the flood bulletin the regional rainfall pattern for the 2019/20 agricultural season is encouraging as parts of southern Africa are expected to receive adequate rainfall in the first half of the rainy season.
This is an improvement from the previous season where less rainfall resulted in devastating impacts on regional agriculture, water resources and hydropower generation.
The good rains experienced over large parts of Namibia during December and early January has been absent fro the past two weeks but isolated showers over certain small parts of the country has returned hope that a good second part of the rainy season might be on the cards.
Farmers in the area of Karasburg and Grunau has reported strong down pours over the past 24 hours while farmers between Mariental and Keetmanshoop also reported isolated showers. Farmers on the agricultural scheme at Hardap experienced a light shower earlier on Sunday which brought some relief to their crops that can no longer be irrigated because of the low water level in the Hardap Dam.
A little to the north, residents and farmers in the area of Schlip also reported light showers at places.
To the west Solitaire and other parts on the edge of the Namib Desert also received some rain. People in the area said they woke up to rain on Sunday morning.
Resident of Windhoek and the areas surrounding the capital city reported light showers on Sunday afternoon.
The Namibia Meteorological Service indicates that the rain situation might improve from Monday onwards as partly cloudy and hot to very hot conditions with a few thundershowers in the central and southern parts in the forecast. Isolated thundershowers can be expected in the north while windy conditions will prevail over the interior.
People at the coast can expect partly cloudy and cool to warm condition with fog patches in the morning."

RESIDENTS of southern Namibia rejoiced as the Fish River filled up with flood water that caused it flow strongly on Thursday.
The flowing river brought hope to many Namibians living in southern Namibia that February will be a good month for rain.
Further to the east the farmers in the Rehoboth Gebiet and Schlip also reported strong rains for the first time in the current season. Measurement as high as 50 millimetres was reported by some farmers.
The strong rainfall of the past 48 hours also ensured the Onaob Dam to the west of Rehoboth received a significant inflow of water.
Windhoek and the area surrounding the capital city also received isolated thunder showers
The northern half of Namibia continued to receive good downpours with farmers in the areas to the east of Grootfontein reporting up to 70 millimetres of rain over the past two days.
Residents of the main towns of the far northern parts f Namibia received some heavy down pours over the past two days and expectations are high thet the good rains will continue well into February.
The Namibia Meteorological Service predicts sunny and hot weather conditions for the south and west of the country while elsewhere partly cloudy and hot weather with some scattered thundershowers in the central-north and north eastern half of the country can be expected.
People living at the coast can expect sunny and warm conditions in the south while elsewhere partly cloudy and cool conditions with fog patches at first will prevail.

Ergiebige Niederschläge sind in vielen Landesteilen in den vergangenen zwei Tagen gemessen worden. Aus dem Norden meldete das Wetternetzwerk SASSCAL bis zu 70 Millimeter. Ebenso fiel auch im Süden starker Regen, darunter mehr als 50 Millimeter in der Gegend um Rehoboth. Der Oanob-Stausee hat starken Zufluss erhalten und ist nun zu 47 Prozent, gegenüber 37 Prozent am Montag, gefüllt. Auch der Fish soll in weiten Teilen im Süden laufen, wie Farmer aus der Gegend berichteten.

Water levels in Kavango, Zambezi and Kunene rivers keep rising
RUNDU, 13 FEB (NAMPA) – The water levels of the Kavango, Zambezi and Kunene rivers continued to rise over the past few days.
This was revealed in the latest daily flood bulletin released by the Namibia Hydrological Service in the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry on Wednesday.
The bulletin said the water levels in the Zambezi, Kavango and Kunene rivers remain higher compared to last year during the same time.
It said the Zambezi River level at Katima Mulilo was at 1.16 metres (m) a week ago but increased to 1.57m by Wednesday morning, while the water levels of the Kavango River at Rundu and Nkurenkuru are currently at 6.16m and 3.97m respectively.
A week ago, the Kavango River recorded about 5.64m at the Rundu station and increased to 6.08 on Tuesday and at the Nkurenkuru station, the water level was recorded at 2.29m last week. On Tuesday, it was measured at 3.86m before reaching 3.97 on Wednesday morning.
Last year around the same time, the Zambezi River was at 2.0m, while the Kavango River was at 5.23m.
On the other hand, the water level on the lower Orange River at Blouputs in the south recorded 0.33m on Wednesday morning and users were urged to take note of the fluctuating low levels on the river.
